Bred for the Work

Built to Work

The Belgian Malinois is widely recognized for its intelligence, athleticism, stamina, environmental awareness, and strong desire to work. These characteristics make the breed especially well suited for demanding scent-detection assignments.

Kaila possesses a strong work drive and a natural desire to search. When deployed, she is focused on locating target odor rather than relying on what can be seen. Her energy, persistence, and ability to work through different environments allow her to search areas that may be difficult or time-consuming to evaluate visually.

Kaila was selected not only for her detection ability, but also for the focus, confidence, and endurance needed to work in residential and commercial environments.

The Process

Professionally Trained Detection

Kaila’s training includes the detection of odors associated with live bed bugs and related bed bug biological material. During a search, she works methodically through the designated area while her handler observes her behavior and changes in body language.

Kaila does not determine the size or severity of an infestation. Her role is to identify areas where she exhibits behavior consistent with the presence of target odor. Those areas can then be documented and evaluated so the property owner, facility manager, or pest-management professional can determine the appropriate next step.

1

Change in Behavior

Kaila shows a change in her body language as she encounters target odor.

2

Handler Interprets

The handler interprets the indication based on the totality of her working behavior, not a single trained alert.

3

Area Documented

The location of interest is recorded with photos and notes for accuracy.

4

Info Provided

Findings are reported clearly, discreetly, and confidentially.

5

Next Step

We provide detection and documentation, not treatment. You decide how to respond with your pest-management professional.

Detection-only disclaimer: Kaila’s job is not to provide pest-control treatment. Frontier Recon provides professional K9 detection and documentation to help clients better understand where bed bug activity may be present. Confidentiality and privacy are maintained on every assignment.
The Handler

An Experienced K9 Team

Kaila is handled by Andrew Minson, Frontier Recon’s Director of Operations and an experienced law-enforcement K9 handler. Andrew has worked with multiple K9 partners trained for specialized assignments including narcotics detection, tracking, and article detection.

That experience provides a professional foundation for understanding working-dog behavior, maintaining training standards, recognizing changes in behavior, documenting findings, and communicating results clearly to clients.

Kaila and Andrew continue regular maintenance training to strengthen their working relationship, maintain reliability, and expose the team to different environments and search conditions.
